Women's Golf Defeats Colorado State in Dual Match

March 31, 2003

PHOENIX - The University of Denver women's golf team defeated Colorado State in a dual match over the weekend, shooting a team total of 601 to CSU's 622 at Cimarron Golf Club. The Pioneers shot a 12-over par 301 on Saturday for a 10 stroke lead and finished on Sunday with an 11-over par 300 for a 21 stroke victory.

The Pioneers placed the top two individuals, as sophomore Tessa Gillam (Englewood, Colo.) led the way with rounds of 74-71 - 145 for a three-stroke victory over teammate Kelly Schaub (Greeley, Colo.). Schaub finished second with scores of 72-76 - 148. Gillam was the only golfer to break par in any round, her second round 71 was the best score of the two teams.

Next for Denver was junior Sara Silva (Fort Morgan, Colo.) who shot 79-75 - 154 to finish fifth and junior Kate Waggoner (Denver, Colo.) who shot 76-79 - 155 and finished sixth. Senior Christine Anast (Littleton, Colo.) rounded out Denver's scoring with rounds of 80-78 - 158 to finish seventh.

"Going in I think we knew how important this tournament was for us and I'm really proud of how we played and competed," head coach Sammie Chergo said. "The team really stepped up and competed well and I think this win gives a lot of momentum to the program. I'm also really proud of how both Tessa (Gillam) and Kelly (Schaub) played this weekend; both are coming on at the right time."

Both Denver and Colorado State were to compete in the Mountain View Collegiate tournament March 22-23 but were unable to leave Denver due to the massive snowstorm that hit the area March 18-19. The two teams agreed to play the dual match last weekend and it is considered an NCAA sanctioned event so all scores count towards season averages for ranking purposes.

The Pioneers are next in action beginning Monday, April 7 when they play in the annual BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah.
