Pioneers Picking up Steam in Championships

Dartmouth Skiway, N.H. - - The University of Denver ski team closed out nordic action today with each skier placing in the top-25 including junior Karin Camenisch's (Klosters, Switzerland) third place finish in the 15K classical. The solid performances move the Pioneers up to fourth place in the NCAA Ski Championships with 381.5 points. Denver leap-frogged Vermont, who fell to fourth with 374 points.

Camenisch's third place finish (47:26.0) led the Denver women in nordic action for the second-straight day as she contributed 37 points to the Pioneers' total. Sophomore Tara Hamilton (Anchorage, Alaska) did well by breaking into the top-20 with her time of 49:05.1, which gave her 16th on the day. Also building upon her last performance was junior Niina Karvonen (Suomussalmi, Finland) who came in just over three seconds behind Harvard's Anna Kaempf to earn 20th with a time of 50:28..7.

Two of the three men's nordic skiers posted their best finishes of the tournament in the 20K classical. Denver senior Dylan Prosser (Anchorage, Alaska) finished 1.6 seconds out of 10th place to clinch 13 with 1:00.41.2 on the clock and freshman Martin Bartnes (Bartnes, Norway) cracked the top-20 to earn 18th with a time of 1:01.23.1. Junior Hakon Johansen (Tronheim, Norway) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with his 25th place finish (1:02:32.6).

The 2003 NCAA Skiing Championships conclude tomorrow with the men's slalom at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the women's slalom at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
