Pioneer Family Mourns the Loss of Ron Moore

April 14, 2003

Ronald L. Moore, a member of the University of Denver Athletic Hall of Fame and Board of Trustee member of the University, died Monday, April 7 from illness at the age of 70.

"We are all deeply saddened by the loss of our great friend Ron Moore," said Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Ron helped build Pioneer golf into a highly competitive program and represented the ideals of commitment, dedication and integrity. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the Pioneer Athletics family."

Moore was born in Grand Island, Neb., and earned a golf scholarship to the University of Denver in 1951. An accomplished golfer at every level, Moore crafted a lifetime of success from his winning ways on the course. Inducted into the University of Denver Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002, Moore was a member of two Skyline Conference Championship teams and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1952, '53 and '54.

Inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 1987, Moore's golf titles span more than 30 years starting in 1949 when he won the Central Nebraska Amateur Championship. In 1950 he won the Nebraska High School Championship and went on to win the Sacramento City Amateur in 1957, the Colorado Stroke Play Championship in 1967, the Broadmoor Men's Invitational in 1970, the Colorado Match Play Championship in 1981, and the Phoenix Country Club Men's Amateur Invitational in 1983. He also won the Colorado Open Amateur Championship in 1966 and 1968.

In 1985 he was General Chairman of the PGA Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club and served as the Vice Chairman of the U.S. Open in 1970.

A member of the University of Denver Board of Trustees since 1986, Moore served as chairman of its investment committee and gave time and financial donations to numerous factions of the University. A major contributor to the University of Denver and Colorado community, he was a role model and benefactor for the Pioneer golf program. Through his work and contributions, he helped reinstate the golf program at Denver after a long hiatus.

"Ron's passion for life, golf and giving will be carried on through the members of the women and men's golf programs," head coach and director of golf Sammie Chergo said. "He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by everyone involved with the University of Denver golf family."

"Ron Moore played a major role in the success of the Pioneer golf program," head men's coach Eric Hoos added. "Ron wanted nothing in return except for the team to strive, to reach their potential and conduct themselves with honesty and integrity on and off the course."

Moore is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Martin; daughters Rhonda, Sandra and Julie; and five grandchildren.

A memorial tribute will be held at 3 p.m. today in the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall, 2344 E. Iliff Ave.
