Women's Tennis Advances in Sun Belt Conference Championships

MOBILE, Ala. - The second-seeded University of Denver women's tennis team won its opening match of the 2003 Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championships 4-2 over seventh-seed New Mexico State on Friday afternoon at the Mobile Tennis Courts in Mobile, Ala. Denver improved to 13-6, and will take on sixth-seed Florida International on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at the Mobile Tennis Courts. New Mexico State falls to 9-13 on the season and will play third-seed Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
Denver began the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for the doubles point. The Pioneers then took a 3-0 lead following wins at No. 5 singles by sophomore and Stephanie Ginsburg (Englewood, Colo.) and No. 3 singles by freshman Jenny Trettin (Berlin, Germany. New Mexico State fought back with two straight wins, as Wendy van Beusekom won at No. 4 over sophomore Barbara Kourim (Dallas) and Kate Hodge was a winner at No. 6 over senior Maru Altimirano (Chula Vista, Calif). Sophomore Yanick Dullens (Susteren, Netherlands) sealed the match for the Pioneers with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Stella Veerman.
Denver plays sixth-seeded Florida International tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. CDT.
