Women's Golf Selected for NCAA Regionals

April 28, 2003

DENVER - The University of Denver women's golf team has been selected as one of 63 teams to compete in the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Regionals, the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee announced today. The Pioneers will be making their second-straight trip to Regionals, where the top eight teams from each 21-team region advance to Nationals May 20-23. Denver is the lone team from Colorado to make the 63-team field.

The 2003 West Regional will be hosted by Arizona State and contested at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Last season, the Pioneers finished 19th in the 2002 West Regional hosted by Stanford.

Denver's berth comes on the heels of its most successful campaign since the program was started in 1998, a season that saw them capture a Sun Belt Conference-best two tournament titles and earn a ranking of No. 52 in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance Index. Denver's has two players ranked among the SBC's top 15 golfers, as senior Kelly Schaub (Greeley, Colo.) leads the way with an average of 76.50 in fifth place and sophomore Tessa Gillam (Englewood, Colo.) is second at 77.61 and tied for eighth.

The Pioneers just wrapped up a second place finish at last week's Sun Belt Conference Championships behind eighth-seeded New Mexico State.
