May 28, 2003

STILLWATER, Okla. - University of Denver senior men's golfer Tony Giarratano (Castle Rock, Colo.) struggled to opening-round 15-over par 87 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Course. He finished the day 18 strokes behind first round leader Lee Williams of Auburn, who shot a 3-under par 69.

Giarratano's day got off to a rough start, as he began on the 10th hole and had three double bogeys and two bogeys in his first six holes. After a par on his seventh hole, he had a quadruple bogey eight on his eighth hole and closed with a par to go out in 48 (12-over par). The front nine was a bit improved as he came in with a 3-over par 39 for a round of 87, his highest 18-hole score of the year.
