Denver Men Win Home Opener, 3-0

DENVER - Sophomore goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.) made five saves as the University of Denver men's soccer team shutout the Northeastern Huskies, 3-0, in the Pioneers' home opener on Friday afternoon at Pioneer field.
"Lami has been very consistent the last three matches," said Denver coach Chad Ashton. "He is talking more and giving our defense more confidence. Anytime you can put a zero on the board it builds your confidence."
Freshman James Merriman (Nanaimo, B.C.) put Denver on the board first in the game's 11th minute. Merriman beat the Northeastern's goalkeeper low and right after taking a beautiful ball from fellow freshman, Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah). The two teams played the rest of the half even.
Sophomore Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) notched his second goal of the year in the 48th minute of the game. A Christensen throw-in ignited Flynn's scoring opportunity. Junior Christian Bowers (Holladay, Utah) finished the scoring in the 80th minute. Junior Alejandro Diaz (Caracas, Venezuela) found assisted on the play.
The Pioneers, who are unbeaten in their last three outings, outshot the Huskies 12-9.
New Hampshire defeated Air Force in overtime, 2-1, in the day's first game.
Denver will be in action again on Sunday in the last game of the John Byrden Classic. The Pioneers will face New Hampshire at 1:30 p.m. Air Force will battle Northeastern at 11 a.m.
