No. 23 Denver Wins Seventh Non-Conference Game

Sept. 28, 2003

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team won its seventh non-conference game as it shutout UC Riverside 1-0, at Pioneer Field on Sunday, September 28. The Pioneers' lone goal was scored by senior Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.).

The Pioneers came out strong and dominated the first half. Freshmen Laura Mann (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Lleane Grimdtich (Boulder, Colo.) gave Denver its best scoring chances, both recording one shot on goal. The defensive unit comprised of freshman Jamie Dierberger (Littleton, Colo.), junior Maggie Kirchhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and senior Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) successfully stopped the Highlanders' top scorer, Vanessa Chanez. Although the Pioneers controlled the half, both teams remained scoreless going into the second half.

UC Riverside picked up the pace of the game in the second half but the Pioneer defense prevented the Highlanders from scoring. In the 86th minute of the game, Grimditch dribbled through defenders at midfield and sent a perfect pass to Harris. Harris took a hard shot from the right side of the box to net her fifth goal of the season and third game winner. Grimditch's assist marks her fourth on the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wiley's (Littleton, Colo.) impressive performance led to her third shutout of the season. She made a diving save in the first half to keep the teams tied and held the Highlanders scoreless in the second half. She made six saves on the day, boosting her record to 4-1 on the season.

"A win is a win," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We made the game a lot harder on ourselves when we broke down on the final third of the field but we battled hard and fought defensively. We didn't back down."

The Pioneers begin conference play next weekend when they host Arkansas - Little Rock on Friday, October 3, at 4 p.m. and Arkansas State on Sunday, October 5, at noon.
