Results
DENVER - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Air Force and TCU in El Pomar Natatorium on Jan. 9. The Pioneer men fell to Air Force 159-82, and TCU 136-105. The Pioneer women were defeated by TCU 137-101. TCU swept the competition by also defeating Air Force 131.50 - 111.50.
Sophomore Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) notched two first-place finishes for the Pioneers. She took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.91) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.06). Amereller also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a second-place finish (3:37.36). Senior diver Keelan Smith (Denver, Colo.) sparked the Pioneers' start by finishing second in both the 1-meter dive (219.55) and the 3-meter dive (205.20). Continuing on her path, the women's 400-yard medley relay team also took second (3:59.64), falling short of first place by less than five-tenths of a second.
Success continued for the women as freshman Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) once again dominated in the long distance events, finishing second in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:44.95) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.06). Freshman Meghan McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) clinched the win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.70). Rounding out the top freshmen was Katie Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.), who once again dominated the 200-yard breaststroke with a first-place finish (2:23.62).
On the men's side, the one-two punch of senior John Kolstoe (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) gave Denver a second and third-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 9:49.19 and 9:49.85, respectively. Kolstoe also notched a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.60).
Freshman Michael Peterson (Ames, Iowa) tallied his first top-finish of the season in the 100-yard freestyle (47.20). Freshman Daniel Monsivais (El Paso, Texas) also fared well, finishing third in the 100-yard freestyle (47.81) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.96).
The Pioneer women return to action on Jan. 17, when they travel to Greeley, Colo., to face Northern Colorado at noon. The men and women complete their home season on Jan. 23, when they play host to Colorado College and Metro State at 6 p.m. MT.
