LAKE CHARLES, La. -
Junior Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.) scored the game winning goal in the 74th minute Sunday afternoon to put the University of Denver women's soccer team over Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-2. The Pioneers, now on three-game winning streak, improve to 7-9-2, 5-2 with one regular season game remaining.
Both Denver and Louisiana-Lafayette scored two goals in the first half. The Ragin' Cajuns scored the early goal in the ninth minute, but Denver evened the score shortly after in the 15th minute when senior Leah Becherer (Oakland, Calif.) crossed the ball to sophomore Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) who blasted it past Louisiana-Lafayette keeper Kristen Malen.
The Pioneers went ahead, 2-1, in the 23rd minute when freshman Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) converted a free kick from five yards out. Seven minutes later Ragin' Cajun Stephanie Lynch put the ball past sophomore keeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) to tie the game, 2-2.
It was in the 74th minute freshman Danielle Kirschner (Hewlett, N.Y.) got the ball to McCallum who beat the Cajun defense and keeper Malen to score the game winning goal for the Pioneers. This is McCallum's first goal of the season and her second of her career at Denver.
"The players showed a lot of poise throughout the game, said head coach Jeff Hooker. "It's a successful weekend anytime you can go on the road and come a way with two victories."
Denver will return to action in its final regular season home game at Pioneer Field on Friday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. against Florida International.
