Women Place Second and Men Take Fourth at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Notre Dame Invitational in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The women finished second, and the men were fourth.
The women's team scored 1,443.5 points to place second out of 13 teams, behind Truman State with 1709 points. Bowling Green was third with 1,186 points, Dennison finished fourth with 915.5 points, and West Virginia was fifth with 864 points. The men's team finished fourth out of 11 teams including host school, No. 21 ranked Notre Dame. Denver tallied 939 points to finish behind Notre Dame (2709.5), West Virginia (1,116) and Columbia (964).
The Denver women's team captured 10 event titles in the meet, including two individuals who combined to earn six individual event wins. Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) won titles in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, while Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) won titles in the 200 and 400-yard individual medley, and the 200-yard butterfly. The women's team also won four relays - the 200- yard freestyle relay (Bortnowski, Bradford, Amereller and Totura), the 400-yard freestyle relay (Totura, Miranda, Bortnowski and Amereller), the 800-yard freestyle relay (Iverson, Miranda, Totura and Amereller) and 400-yard medley relay (Totura, Conyers, Iverson and Bortnowski).
The Pioneers broke 11 school records, including 10 women's records, and one men's record. The women set school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Bortnowski, Bradford, Amereller and Totura) in a time of 1:35.60, the 400-yard medley relay (Totura, Conyers, Iverson and Bortnowski) with a time of 3:51.04, the 800-yard freestyle relay (Iverson, Miranda, Totura and Amereller) in 7:31.95, and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Totura, Miranda, Bortnowski and Amereller) with a time of 3:27.33. Iverson set school records in the 100-yard butterfly (56.75), the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.86), the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.66) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.34). Totura set school records in the 100-yard backstroke (57.04), and Katie Conyers set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.01).
For the men, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Michael Peterson, Daniel Monsivais, Matt Diotte and Craig Jollands set a school record with a time of 3:03.81.
The Pioneers will return to action in two weeks when they travel to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. to battle Florida Atlantic and Clemson with competition beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
