BERKELY, Calif. - The Cal women's lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the day and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in a 17-14 win over the University of Denver Pioneers. The loss pulls the Pioneers' record even at 1-1 on the season. Cal also improves to 1-1.

Junior Tanya Fuchs got the Pioneers off on the right foot with her fifth goal of the season five minutes into the match. It would be Denver's only goal until the three minute mark of the first period. Senior Patience Baldwin and sophomore Stephanie Greenlees both tallied a goal at the end of the first half to pull Denver to within, 9-3

The young Pioneers, who sport 12 freshmen on their roster, put up a valiant effort in the second half, outscoring the Bears, 11-8. Baldwin notched three more goals to lead the second half charge. Greenlees and junior Crystal Jack each had two second-half goals. Fuchs, Lindsay Robinson, Alexis Shipman and Tara Bourdelaise all had one second-half tally.

The Bears were able to muster enough offense, thanks to five second-half goals by Molly Brady, to keep Denver at bay.

Denver's junior goalkeeper Steph Schneider picked up her first loss in goal as she recorded 11 saves and faced 30 shots. Hilary Lynch recorded six saves in the win.

Denver will return to action when the Pioneers play host to UC Davis on Sun., March 7, at 1 p.m.
