DENVER - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team used four points from both senior Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Tara Bourdelaise (Gambrillis, Md.) to defeat the UC Davis Aggies, 12-10, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action in a Sunday afternoon tilt at Pioneer Field.
UC Davis scored the match's first two goals but the Pioneers responded with three of their own. Baldwin tallied Denver's first score off a Bourdelaise feed. Junior Tanya Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and sophomore Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored the Pioneers' second and third goals of the game, giving Denver an early 3-2 lead.
The Aggies would score the next five goals, two at the end of the first half and three to start the second.
Denver, down 7-3 with 20 minutes remaining, used a timeout to regain its composure. The strategy of head coach Cathy Nelson Reese would pay off as the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run. Baldwin setup freshmen Kate Broderick (Chanittly, Va.) on a set play after the timeout, making the score, 7-4.
Greenlees (two), Baldwin, Bourdelaise and junior Crystal Jack (Kingwood, Texas) each scored over the next nine minutes, giving Denver a 9-7 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.
UD Davis would notch three of the final four goals of the contest to send the game into overtime.
The Pioneers would own the extra session, tallying the only two goals. Bourdelaise scored the game-winning goal with 4:34 remaining in overtime. Broderick added her second career goal a minute later to secure the win.
Katie McMahon (3 goals) and Leslie Kado (3 assists) led the Aggies with three points each.
Denver's junior goalkeeper Steph Schneider (Leesburg, Va.) picked up her second win in goal as she recorded 10 saves and faced 22 shots. Kristen Braasch recorded 18 saves in the loss.
Denver will return to action next Sun., March 13, when the Pioneers travel to College Park, Md. face Davidson at 11 a.m. MT.
