Mamaronek, N.Y. - University of Denver men's golfer Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.) was defeated Wednesday in the first round of matches of the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club. Soule, who led a four-golfer Colorado contingent in qualifying with a two-round total of 145 (5-over par) Tuesday, was defeated 1-up by Brian Gillepsie of Wayne, Pa. Trailing by as many as 4-down in the match, Soule made a valiant comeback but came up short. In qualifying, Soule shot 73-72 - 145 to lead all golfers from Colorado. Teammate Jimmy Cunningham (Walkersville, Md.) shot 80-77 - 157 and missed the cut.
