MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Denver women's soccer team regrouped from a disappointing loss on the road Friday at the Montana Nike Cup, to down the Vandals 2-0 in its last game of the tournament. Senior Maggie Kirchhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored both goals off penalty kicks.
The first penalty kick was awarded in the 25th minute as a result of a Vandal chopping down Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) as she was dribbling down the left side. Kirchhoff came and converted the penalty kick to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
Kirchhoff took the second penalty kick of the match to put the Denver up 2-0 in the 80th minute after the referee called pushing on a corner kick on Idaho.
The back line for the Pioneers of Kirchhoff, Laura Mann (Fort Collins, Colo.), Leah Becherer (Oakland, Calif.) and Emily Niven (Studio City, Calif.) controlled the game and held the Vandals scoreless. Goalkeeper, Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her first shut out of the season with a dominating performance in the net.
"The girls came out and played hard," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "We got the result we needed on the road and hopefully we can build on this victory and play well at home."
Denver returns to action at home Thursday, Sept. 2, in the University of Denver Soccer Classic when the battle San Diego at 4:15 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
