WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Denver women's soccer team lost to Utah this afternoon, 3-1, in the first game of the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic. Taryn Hemmings scored the only goal for Denver.
The Utes struck early, in the sixth minute when Lauren Field headed the ball past goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.). The header from Field came off a corner kick played short to Kim Lloyd who crossed it from about 20 yards out to Field.
Denver evened the score in the 13th minute when Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) served the ball to freshman Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) who drilled it past Utah's goalkeeper Ashley Mason. This was the first goal of Hemmings career and the only goal the Pioneers would score for the rest of the game.
Hailey Marsh scored the game winning goal 48th minute on a pass by Kim Lloyd. After this goal, Utah never looked back as they sealed the win shortly there after in the 52nd minute when Amanda Feigt took the ball down the right side and put it in past goalkeeper Wiley.
"It wasn't the result we were looking for, but there definitely was good moments in the game," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "Now we need to build on those and prevent the mental lapses from occurring."
Denver is now 2-3 on the season.
The Pioneers return to action in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic on Sunday, Sept. 12, at noon against host Wake Forest at Noon. Follow live game stats on the University of Denver's homepage at www.denverpioneers.com.
