Pioneers Play Best Match of the Season in Winning Nightcap

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Denver volleyball team recorded season-highs in kills, attack percentage and blocks and played its best match of the season in a 3-1 win over Rhode Island Friday night in its second match of the Holiday Inn/Jayhawk Invitational hosted by Kansas. The Pioneers dropped their earlier match against No. 25 Wisconsin, 3-0.
The Pioneers were excellent from the outset, recording 16 kills and just two errors in the first game for a match-high .438 attack percentage. Denver continued its torrid hitting the rest of the match, registering 16 kills in each of the next three games and setting season-highs for kills (64) and attack percentage (.368). The Pioneers were also excellent defensively, recording 19.5 blocks and limiting Rhode Island to just a .100 hitting mark.
"I'm pretty pleased with our performance in this match," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "The way our defense played, both back row and blocking, is really a positive for this early in the season. It was very good and very nice to see."
Sophomore Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) led three Pioneers in double figures with a season-high 22 kills and juniors Kristin Halt (St. Charles, Ill.) and Amanda Millard (Southlake, Texas) each had 13 for Denver. Junior Sarah Adamis (Naperville, Ill.) led a stellar Pioneer defensive effort with 22 of Denver's 60 digs.
Earlier Saturday, Denver was defeated by No. 25 Wisconsin, 3-0 as Hunter and Halt recorded 14 and nine kills, respectively. Freshman Sarah Wirth (Sacramento, Calif.) had a .571 attack percentage (4 kills, 0 errors, 7 attacks) to lead the Pioneers and sophomore setter Shannon Parker (Woodridge, Ill.) had a season-high 36 assists in that match.
Denver will face host Kansas in the final match of the tournament tomorrow at 1 p.m.
