DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team recorded a 60-42 kill advantage and head coach Beth Kuwata became Denver's all-time winningest head volleyball coach Friday night as the Pioneers swept Syracuse 3-0 in the opening game of the University of Denver Invitational. The win improves Denver's record to 3-5 on the season. Syracuse drops to 9-1.
The Pioneers dominated from the outset, recording at least 19 kills in each of the three games and recording a .276 hitting percentage. Three Pioneers recorded double digits in kills, led by junior Amanda Millard's (Southlake, Texas) season-high 14 kills and match-high .522 attack percentage. Sophomore Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) added 13 and junior Kristin Halt (St. Charles, Ill.) had 12 for Denver.
With the win, Kuwata earned her 118th career victory, passing Jerrie McGahan as Denver's most successful head volleyball coach. McGahan finished her career in 1995 with a career mark of 117-131 (.472). Kuwata now has a career mark of 118-134 (.468).
"It is a great accomplishment," she said. "It's a testament to all of the teams I've had here at Denver and it's something I'm proud of. Tonight we played a solid match. We knew coming in that floor defense would be a key in this match and I think we played very well in that area. We were able to dig out some tough balls and get them back over the net and I was happy to see that."
Denver will play in tomorrow's second match against Radford at 1 p.m.
