BOULDER, Colo. - In the final game of the Colorado Women's Soccer Classic on an extremely windy Sunday afternoon, the University of Denver women's soccer team was shut out by instate rival Colorado, 3-0. The Pioneers end the weekend 0-1-1 and fall to 2-5-1.
Colorado capitalized on playing with the wind in the first half, jumping ahead 2-0. The first goal came in the 20th minute when Kathryn Grandinetti crossed the ball and Fran Munnelly got a head on it. The ball bounced off Denver goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) and Allie True knocked it in on the rebound.
Not even two minutes later, the Buffaloes continued their stampede and netted their second goal of the game. Grandinetti crossed the ball in the middle to Fran Munnelly who put it past Wiley on the left side.
In the first half Denver was out shot 13-3 and Wiley made six saves.
In the second half, Denver had the wind with them and came out revamped and made a valiant effort to put at least one point on the board, but the Buffaloes' offense was too much for the Pioneers to handle.
The third and final goal of the game came in the 70th minute when Katie Griffin shot the ball hitting Wiley and bouncing off her, no Pioneer could clear it in time as it bounced in the middle and Allison Kidd tapped the ball into the back of net.
"We came out and were pressing them in the second half," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "If we could have gotten a goal, it could have been a different game."
The Pioneers will be back in action this weekend when they head west to Santa Clara, Calif., for the Santa Clara adidas Classic. There they will face Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. MT and Stanford on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT.
