SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Denver women's soccer team was shutout 3-0 by No. 20 Stanford in the first game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic, early Friday evening.
The Cardinal scored early, in the seventh minute when Jenny Farenbaugh took the ball down the left side and crossed it in front of the goal to Marcie Ward. Ward tapped the ball in past sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.).
Freshman Taryn Hemmings (Greely, Colo.) tried to answer challenge off the kick off on a break away, but Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhardt smothered the ball before she could get a shot off.
The Pioneers held Stanford at one for the rest of the half. It wasn't until the 60th minute when Farenbaugh had the ball on the right side passing it to fellow Cardinal Lizzy George who tapped the ball in net on the left side.
Stanford's third and final goal of the game was scored in the 62nd minute from a corner kick that was cleared out by the Denver defense but continued to bounce around the middle. It wasn't until Shari Summers got a foot on in it from about 15 yards out blasting it high to the left corner way out of reach for Wiley.
Time in the net was shared by both Wiley and senior Cassandra Kaeding (Saugus, Calif.). Kaeding entered the game in the 68th minute. Wiley increases her total number of saves to 56 on the season with two dynamic saves from this evening.
Diana Brunkhardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had the lone shot on goal in the 83rd minute when she tried to drill a shot past Stanford keeper but she was able to punch the ball out and over the net. Denver was outshot, 14-1.
