Denver Topples the San Diego Toreros

Sept. 4, 2004

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer shutout a very athletic San Diego team this afternoon in the final game of the University of Denver Soccer Classic, in what turned out to be a rain soaked and slippery Pioneer Field. Diana Brunkhardt (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Holly Huppert (Littleton, Colo.) and Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) each scored a goal for the Pioneers.

Brunkhardt scored the first goal of the game late in the first half in the 39th minute when Grimditch served the ball to Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.). It bobbled in the middle before Brunkhardt struck the ball from about 10 yards out, blasting it to the top left corner over the goalkeeper Karen Cook.

Huppert scored very early in the second half, not even realizing at first that she had scored her first goal as a Pioneer. Right after kickoff, Huppert took the ball down the right side of the field and blasted a long ball over the keeper and into the top left corner of the net.

The third and final goal of the afternoon, scored by Grimditch, in the 55th minute secured Denver's victory in its final game in the University of Denver Soccer Classic.

"All-around today, we played great," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "San Diego is a very fast and athletic team, so for the first 10 minutes we had to feel them out and make adjustments. I thought today we had found the passion we needed to win."

Rebounding from a 1-0 loss against Eastern Michigan on Thursday, Denver now stands at 2-2.

Denver is headed to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic beginning on Friday, Sept. 10. There they will square off against No. 24 Utah on Friday, and Wake Forest on Sunday.
