The University of Denver volleyball team recorded just a .048 attack percentage and despite 18 kills from sophomore Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) suffered its second consecutive loss Friday night, 3-1 at Illinois State in the opening game of the Barker GMC Classic. The Pioneers are now 0-2 on the young season.
The Pioneers started out the match with a 30-26 win in the first game despite a .047 hitting percentage. Denver recorded an 11-9 kill advantage in the first game and held the Redbirds to their worst hitting game of the match, a -.028 effort.
But Illinois State rebounded to win each of the next three games, holding Denver to just 18 total kills in the final two games. Savannah Knowles and Laura Doornbos finished with 16 and 15 kills for the Redbirds, respectively.
The Pioneers had a season-high 17 service errors.
"It was a tough night and obviously the service errors didn't help," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "We couldn't control our side of the net very well but we are looking forward for another shot at a win tomorrow."
Denver is next in action tomorrow when it plays a pair of matches, opening the day against Iowa (9 a.m.) and finishing the tournament against Wright State (4 p.m.).
