Denver Trails Utah After Day One

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams trail Utah after day one of competition in Salt Lake City, 104-63 and 96-70, respectively. Freshman Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) highlighted the evening for the Pioneers and broke her own school record in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.26).
The Pioneers began the meet with second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay for both men and women with times of 1:34.53 and 1:48.61, respectively.
Freshman Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.) helped the Pioneers bounce back with a first-place finish in the 1650-yard free (16.29.91).
Denver was on a roll when it swept two consecutive events, the 200-yard free and the 100-yard backstroke. First junior Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) claimed top honors in the 200-yard free (1:55.11) and fellow junior Laura Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) finished right behind her in second (1:56.86). For the men, sophomore Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) then won the 200-yard free (1:42.53).
In the 100-yard backstroke freshman Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) started it off for the women and claimed top honors (58.59), while freshman Evan Harper (Morris, Ill.) recorded a first-place finish for the men (51.66).
Later, Iverson broke her own school record by almost two seconds in the 200-yard butterfly. That would be the last first-place finish the Pioneers would have for the rest of the evening as both Utah teams pulled ahead and tallied first place finishes in the remaining events.
The Pioneers will wrap-up the meet against Utah on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 10:30 a.m.
