DENVER-The University of Denver women's soccer team fell, 1-0 to Sun Belt Conference rival, Arkansas State at Pioneer Field this afternoon. The Pioneers outshot the Indians 18-3, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The loss drops Denver to 7-6-2 (4-1-1 SBC) while the Indians improve to 5-10-1 (1-5-1 SBC).
"We had the opportunities, but were unable to capitalize," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We still have three more games left in the regular season and we need to learn from our mistakes and finish the season strong."
DU controlled most of the action in the first half, hitting several shots that were just wide of the net or were knocked high over the crossbar. Junior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) led the offense, registering three shots on goal, two of which hit the post. Arkansas State continued to hang around and the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half the Pioneers continued to dominate the play, but couldn't put anything in the net. Midfielder, Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) had several good attempts that were stymied by ASU goalkeeper, Kelly Goodman. The Indians got on the board in the 65th minute of action, when Shawna Sparks received a pass from MaryJo Rana, and floated the ball just over goalkeeper, Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.). The Indians sealed the victory in the 88th minute when Stepahnie Ray caught Wiley out of position and slipped the ball just through the left side.
The Pioneers are next in action Friday, Oct. 21 when they head to Denton, Texas to take on Sun Belt Conference foe, North Texas. The match is set to take place at 6 p.m.(MT).
