DENVER-The University of Denver women's soccer team posted its first sweep in league play with a 5-0 win over Troy this afternoon at Pioneer Field. Senior Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.) and junior Laura Mann (Ft. Collins, Colo.) scored their first goals of the season. Rachael Fry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) and Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) also added goals for the Pioneers. Denver improves to 5-5-1 (2-0 SBC) on the season, while the Trojans fall to 4-5-1 (2-2 SBC). Denver outshot the Trojans 21-1.
"This was a very good weekend for us," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We got back to .500 which is important at this time of the season. I thought that in the second half everyone played well. It was difficult to find fault with anyone, they played like a well-oiled machine and got the job done."
Denver got things started offensively just minutes into the game. Billingsley, Grimditch and sophomore Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) started to move the ball through the midfield quite well giving the Pioneers several scoring opportunities. The first came when Hemmings almost broke through the Troy backline for a breakaway but Troy goalkeeper, Laura Longard stifled the shot. The Pioneers continued to dominate offensively and in the 28th minute Mann hit a rocket through the left side on a dish by Grimditch, to give Denver the 1-0 lead.
DU struck again just minutes later on a corner kick. Freshman Jessica Keller (Arvada, Colo.) served in a perfect corner that Fry put her head on pushing the ball just past Longard for the score, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.
In the second half the Pioneers offense proved to be too much for the Trojans. The Pioneers tallied two more goals just 10 minutes into the second half. Senior McCallum tallied the last goal of the game. In the 89th minute, Sarah Martinez (Golden, Colo.) made a run down the sideline and served up a cross, which McCallum headed home, sealing the Pioneer victory.
The Pioneers continue conference action next weekend when they travel to Florida for a Friday night contest with Florida International and head to Louisiana for a Sunday afternoon match-up with Louisiana-Lafayette. Denver returns home Friday Oct. 14 when it hosts Arkansas-Little Rock in a 3 p.m. match at Pioneer Field.
