The No. 9 Denver Pioneers open WCHA play this weekend (Oct. 28-29) with a two-game series at North Dakota...The series is a matchup of the two teams that played in the 2005 NCAA National Championship game...DU defeated North Dakota, 4-1, to capture its seventh NCAA title...DU and North Dakota are tied for second all-time with seven NCAA championships...North Dakota owns a 123-104-7 advantage in the series that began during the 1949-50 season...DU swept the 2004-05 series 4-0, including a pair of 4-2 wins in Grand Forks on Feb. 4-5, 2005...DU head coach George Gwozdecky captured his 400th career win on March 18, 2005, when the Pioneers defeated the Fighting Sioux 2-1 in overtime at the WCHA Final Five...The game on Friday, Oct. 28 will be televised live on CSTV...The Pioneers ended a two-game losing streak with a pair of victories last weekend...DU defeated Air Force 4-2 and Notre Dame 6-3 to improve to 2-2 overall...DU improved to 41-7 (.854) in nonconference play since 2001-02...Brock Trotter, Zach Blom and Patrick Mullen scored their first career goals in the 4-2 win over Air Force...Goaltender Glenn Fisher stopped 23 shots against Air Force to improve to 1-1 with a 3.03 GAA and .885 Sv%...Ryan Dingle netted the game-winning goal against Air Force and extended his goal streak to three games with a shorthanded goal in DU's 6-3 win over Notre Dame...Co-captain Matt Carle led the DU offense with one goal and three assists for his fourth career four-point game...Trotter added two power-play goals in the win and is tied for the team in goals with Dingle...Co-captain Gabe Gauthier added one goal and two assists against Notre Dame for his 10th career three-point effort and 34th career multi-point game...2005 WCHA Rookie of the Year Paul Stastny added one goal and one assist, while goaltender Peter Mannino evened his record at 1-1 with a 3.25 GAA and .825 Sv%...DU added two shorthanded goals (Gauthier and Dingle) in the win...Trotter (3-2--5) and Gauthier (1-4--5) lead DU in scoring...DU has scored the first goal in all four games this season...The Pioneers are 4-of-34 (.118) on the power play and 20-of-23 (.870) on the penalty kill...The Pioneers return home on Nov. 4-5 for a two-game series against Michigan Tech...DU will raise its 2005 NCAA National Championship banner in a pre-game ceremony on Nov. 5.

The Pioneers went 2-0 this week with a nonconference win over Air Force Wednesday, followed by their 10th sweep of the season at home against Florida International to improve to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. Sophomore middle blocker Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) nailed 15 kills on 23 swings and only committed three errors for a .521 hit percentage for the week. Junior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) had 26 kills in two matches, including a perfect 8-for-8 with no errors in DU's opening game against FIU. Defensively, Kristin Halt (St. Charles, Ill.) had 15 digs and Muller added 14 blocks. Denver travels to Arkansas-Little Rock Friday followed by North Texas Sunday.
Men's Soccer - (5-7-1, 1-4-0)

The University of Denver men's soccer team dropped its third and fourth consecutives games over the weekend. The Pioneers suffered a 3-0 setback at Sacramento State on Friday and a 3-1 loss at San Jose State on Sunday. Denver has been outscored 10-1 over the last four games, with the Pioneers' lone goal coming off a converted penalty kick by senior back Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.) in the 81st minute of their match at SJSU. DU's four-game losing streak is its longest since the 2002 season when Denver dropped seven consecutive games. Girard (1a, 5a) and junior midfielder Ben Mendozza (Aurora, Colo.) (3g, 1) lead the Pioneers with seven points each. Girard's five assists are also a team best. Mendozza and senior back Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) have each tallied a team-high three goals. DU will play host to Sacramento State and San Jose State in the final two home games of the 2005 campaign this weekend.
Women's Soccer - (7-7-2, 4-2-1)

The women's soccer team dropped its only match of the weekend, 1-0 to conference foe North Texas. The Pioneers currently own a 7-7-2 (4-2-1 SBC) record. The Pioneers and the Mean Green battled for the better part of the first half, with both teams recording scoring opportunities, but despite the chances the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0. Junior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) recorded five of the Pioneers shots and was the lone Pioneer to register more than one shot. North Texas midfielder, Brittany Cleveland, gathered a loose ball in the box after a corner kick and scored in the 81st minute to give North Texas the 1-0 victory. Denver goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) allowed one goal and made five saves on the evening. The Pioneers wrap up the 2005 regular season next weekend when they face Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky in the final weekend of conference action. DU travels to Mobile, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Nov. 2-5.

The men and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Early Bird Invitational hosted by CSU last weekend, with both teams finishing in fourth place. The women finished with 500 points and the men earned 339. The Texas Christian men (1,024.50) and women (1,152.50) took top honors Diver Aaron Feight (Littleton, Colo.) took top honors in the 3-meter and 1-meter events, while Holly Watson (Sugar Land, Texas) earned runner-up honors in the women's 1-meter and 3-meter. Denver had two individual titles as junior Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) won the 500-free and sophomore Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) took top honors in the 200-IM. The women's 400-medley relay also captured the top spot. Freshman Ivy Yi (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished in third place in the 100-breast (1:08.96), while the women's 200-medley relay and 400-free relay registered a fourth and fifth-place showing, respectively On the men's side, freshman Daniel Vollmer (Ajax, Ontario) led the way, tallying a third-place finish in the 100 back (53.91). The 400-free relay team of Vollmer, Michael Peterson (Ames, Iowa), Daniel Monsivias (El Paso, Texas) and James Monaghan (Toronto, Ontario) recorded a third-place showing (3:31.70), while the 400-medley relay tallied a fourth place-finish. Erik Bordwell (Wilmette, Ill.) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 1650-free (7:23.50).The teams will next be in action Oct. 28-29 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.

The men's golf team is back in action beginning today when it competes for the final time this fall at the Barona Creek Invitational near San Diego. The Pioneers are coming off an impressive, seven stroke victory Oct. 15 at the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic held at San Joaquin Country Club. In that tournament, the Pioneers shot a final round 4-over par 284 and recorded a 54-hole score of 858 (6-over par), good enough for a seven shot win over second place San Diego State (865). San Diego State will serve as host to this week's event. Monday's tournament will take place at the 7,088 yard, 72-par Barona Creek Golf Course, in Lakeside, Calif., today at 7:30 a.m. PDT. The tournament will begin with two, 18-hole rounds on Monday and end with the final 18-holes on Tuesday. Senior Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.) is looking for back-to-back victories after he won his second career tournament at the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic, firing a career-low final-round 5-under par 66 and a 54-hole score of 210 (3-under par) to win by one shot over Nevada's Adam Hagen (211).

The women's golf team shot the best final round in the 20-team field of the Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate last Tuesday, a 6-over par 294 that vaulted the Pioneers into a sixth-place finish at the tournament hosted by New Mexico State University. The Pioneers, looking to win a third consecutive tournament for the first time in school history, shot 309-300-294 - 903 (39-over par) and finished 12 strokes back of tournament winner Missouri (891). Junior Emily Hoeper (Kansas City, Mo.), who was also looking for a third consecutive victory, shot a final-round 1-over par 73 and finished in a two-way tie for 17th place. Hoeper shot 77-75-73 - 225 (9-over par) over the 54-hole event and finished 12 strokes back of a two-way tie for first place. Freshman Katie Kempter (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded the best single round of any Denver golfer in the tournament with a 1-under par 71 in the final round and finished in a tie for 29th place after beginning the round tied for 41st. Freshman Sara Djos (Gothenburg, Sweden), fired her best round of the tournament with a 1-over par 73 and finished with a 54-hole score of 226 (10-over par) and in a tie for 19th place. The Pioneers have just one fall tournament left to play, that coming Nov. 1-2 in Oahu, Hawaii at the Kent Youel Invitational.

The DU men's tennis team traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., for the ITA Regionals this week. Sophomore Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Shannon Buck of Air Force 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The doubles team of Holmstrom and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) moved into the quarterfinals before being ousted 8-5 by Buck and Trevor Johnson. Next up for DU is the Southern California Intercollegiate in Los Angeles Nov. 2-5.
Women's Tennis
Fall Season Complete http://denverpioneers.collegesports.com/sports/w-tennis/denv-w-tennis-body.html The Pioneers competed at the ITA Regional Tournament this week in Salt Lake City, Utah. Senior Suzana Maksovic (Helsingborg, Sweden) led DU in the tourney, advancing to the round of 16 before falling to Olga Boulytcheva of Brigham Young 7-5, 7-5. In doubles, Maksovic and rookie Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) fell 8-6 in the round of 32 to Megan Biorkman and Hadley MacFarlane of Boise State. Denver does not return to action until 2006, when the Pioneers face Colorado Jan. 20 in Boulder.
