Bowling Green, Ky. - A Dana Schonberger (Littleton, Colo.) goal in the 18th minute of play was all the Pioneers needed to defeat Western Kentucky, 1-0 this afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action. Denver improves to 8-8-2 (5-3-1 SBC) while Western Kentucky falls to 6-9-3 (4-4-1 SBC). Goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made five saves in the match and earned her sixth shutout of the season.
The Pioneers came out with intensity in the first half, trying to avenge a heartbreaking 3-2, loss to Middle Tennessee Friday night. Schonberger got things started for DU when she stole the ball from a Western Kentucky player and took it to goal for her second score of the season.
In the second half, the Pioneers continued to play an offensive game recording nine shots, seven of them on goal. Freshman defender Jessica Keller (Arvada, Colo.) recorded two shots on goal as did junior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.).
"This was an important win for us," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "I'm proud of the way the team rebounded after a tough loss Friday night and hopefully we can continue this into the tournament next week."
The Pioneers will next be in action Nov. 2-5 at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Mobile, Ala.
