Denver rolls against Florida International, 2-1

Oct. 7, 2005

Box Score

MIAMI-The University of Denver women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three with a 2-1 win over conference foe, Florida International. Sophomore forward Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) and freshman Dana Schonberger (Littleton, Colo.) scored for the Pioneers. Goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) was credited with her sixth win of the season as the Pioneers improved to 6-5-1 (3-0 SBC).

"The team came out a little bit sluggish in the first half, "said head coach Jeff Hooker. "They managed not to get themselves in a hole in the first half and came out and regrouped in the second half and were able to put their stamp on the game. I'm proud of the way that they finished the match."

DU got on the board early in the first half, when Hemmings stole the ball from and FIU defender and blasted it through the right side of the net to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 lead. The half was played pretty evenly with both sides getting scoring opportunities though neither team was able to find the back of the net before halftime.

The Pioneers came out more focused in the second half and continued to distribute the ball and make runs off the ball to create opportunities. Schonberger was able to take advantage of the increased intensity and scored her first goal as a Pioneer in the 65th minute of the match on a scramble for the ball in the front of the Golden Panther net.

Denver continues conference action Sunday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Louisiana for a noon match with Louisiana-Lafayette. The Pioneers return home for their final two home matches of the season, Friday Oct. 14 when they host Arkansas-Little Rock in a 3 p.m. match and then take on Arkansas State Sunday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. The match against Arkansas State marks the final home game for seniors Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.) and Ashley Donnell (Albuquerque N.M.). They will be honored before the match.
