Lafayette, La.- The University of Denver women's soccer team remained undefeated in conference action by tying Louisiana-Lafayette, 1-1 in two overtime periods this afternoon. Junior defender Margaux Lochmiller (Littleton, Colo.) scored for the Pioneers. DU moves to 6-5-2 (3-0-1 SBC) while Louisiana-Lafayette now owns a 3-5-3 (1-2-1 SBC) record. Pioneer goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made five saves in 110 minutes of action.
"The team did well today, "said head coach Jeff Hooker. "They showed a lot of character going down 1-0 and then fighting back to earn the tie. I'm proud of them and encouraged by their confidence in each other."
The match was evenly played as both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities. The Ragin Cajuns struck first finding the net in the 26th minute of action. Stephanie Lynch dished a pass to Erika Saffer who out the ball past Wiley to put the Ragin Cajuns up, 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half featured much of the same as both teams continued to have opportunities but neither could capitalize. In the 76th minute of action the Pioneers found the back of the net on a Lochmiller score. A DU outside midfielder served a cross into the box and amid a scramble in the box, Lochmiller pushed the ball past Louisiana-Lafayette goalkeeper, Stephanie Weston for the equalizer.
The Pioneers and Ragin Cajuns battled for two 10 minute overtime periods, but neither team could find the back of the net to claim the victory.
The Pioneers return home Friday Oct. 14 when they host conference foe, Arkansas-Little Rock in a 3 p.m. match at Pioneer Field. Denver concludes the 2005 home schedule Sunday, Oct. 16 when they take on the Arkansas State Indians in an 11 a.m. match. Sunday's match marks the final home match for seniors Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.) and Ashley Donnell (Albuquerque N.M.). They will be honored before the match.
