Series Notes - San Francisco
Denver faces San Francisco for only the second time all-time. Last season, the Dons beat DU 62-59 on Nov. 21 in the Pioneer's home opener. This season, USF is 3-6 overall entering Friday's contest against DU.
About the Pioneers...
The University of Denver women's basketball team recorded its second consecutive win this past weekend with a 55-51 victory over Boise State to improve to 3-4 on the season. Jenna Cole (Lincoln, Neb.) led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Venice Adams (Luling, La.) nabbed 11 rebounds. Adams (Luling, La.) hails as the team's lone senior and joins Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) and Brooke Meyer (Denver, Colo.) as team captains for the 2005 season. The Pioneers are coached by Pam Tanner who is in her 11th season at the helm at Denver.
Three Pioneer players stand at the top of the DU points leader board. Cole, Lowery and Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) average eight points per game to lead Denver. Benham also leads Denver in rebounding (6.6 per game), while Lowery paces Denver in assists with 19 on the season. While Denver continues to be outscored by its opponents, the Pioneers have stepped up their defensive intensity to shut down the offensive attack of opponents, which was a key component toward DU's last two victories.
Outlook on the Falcons...
Air Force is 6-1 entering Tuesday's meeting with the Pioneers, also holding a two-game winning streak. The Falcons nabbed their last two victories on the road with a 60-56 win over Utah State, followed by a 81-61 victory at Montana State. The Falcons average 72.0 points per game, outscoring their opponents on average by 12 points.
USAFA is led by Pamela Findlay, who averages 12.4 points per game and has a team-high 10 steals. Findlay has led the Falcons in their last two wins with 15 points against Utah State and a 18-point effort against Montana State.
Defensively, Alecia Steele averages 7.4 rebounds per game and recorded a double-double against Montana State with 14 points and 11 boards.
Outlook on the Dons...
San Francisco enters Friday's contest with a record of 3-6. The Dons broke a three-game losing streak Sunday with a 70-63 victory over Cal State Fullerton at home. USF has enjoyed the confines of War Memorial Arena thus far this season, holding a 3-2 record at home compared to 0-4 record on the road.
USF is led by Dominique Carter, who averages 15.1 points per game and 21 assists. Carter has been San Francisco's offensive leader in five of the seven contests played this season, followed by Nickie Warren, who leads the Dons in rebounding (7.1 per game). Carter, Warren and Shay Rollins each have 10 steals on the year, while the team averages 35.3 rebounds per game.
The majority of USF's contests this season have been decided by slim margins as the Dons have only been outscored 566-550.
Reini Suffers Knee Injury Against Boise State
Pioneer center Lauren Reini (Portland, Ore.) suffered a left knee injury in the second half of Denver's win against Boise State Saturday afternoon, forcing her to leave the game early. Reini is scheduled to have an MRI done for further analysis Monday evening.
A transfer from Lehigh in 2003, Reini is in her first season at Denver after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules. The Portland, Ore. native averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Pioneers Enjoy Back-To-Back Wins At Home
For the first time since February 2005, the Pioneers posted back-to-back wins with a 77-58 win over Colorado State, followed by a 55-51 victory over Boise State. The last time DU enjoyed two consecutive victories was a 57-47 win over New Mexico State Feb. 17, followed by a 74-56 victory over North Texas Feb. 20.
