Denver Swimmers Wrap Up Second Place Finishes at SBC Championships

The women's squad continued its impressive showing at the Championships on Saturday, winning three more individual titles and a relay. Freshman Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) set a school and pool-record of 2:00.10 in winning the 200-yard backstroke for her second individual title after capturing the 100-yard backstroke on Friday. Totura shattered the previous 200-back record of 2:03.18 set by herself earlier this season.
Also capturing individual event titles Saturday were junior Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.04 and freshman Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.75. For Iverson, it was her third title of the Championships.
Denver's 400-yard relay team of junior Lauren Miranda, freshman Lauren Bortnowski, freshman Jackie Bradford and Amereller also were victorious with a time of 3:27.18, breaking the previous school and pool record.
The men's team recorded no event or relay titles Saturday but did register three second-place finishes. Sophomore Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.79 and freshman Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.) took home second-place honors in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:47.53. Sophomore Derek Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) was Denver's other second-place finisher as he edged teammate Marcus Christianson (Hutchinson, Minn.) in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.53. Christianson finished third at 2:04.60.
Iverson was named the 2005 Outstanding Women's Swimmer in the post-meet awards ceremony and Jollands was named Co-Outstanding Men's Swimmer with WKU's Karl Swanson. Denver head coach Jim Henry was named the SBC Women's Coach of the Year.
