FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior attackman Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) scored a career-high seven goals and junior Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) added a hat trick to lead the University of Denver men's lacrosse team over Sacred Heart, 19-7, this afternoon at Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn. Denver improves to 4-2 while SHU drops to 4-3.
"It's great to come out east and get a win on the road," said head coach Jamie Munro. "It was a total team effort, and overall I thought we played well this afternoon."
Denver scored first on an unassisted goal by freshman Michael Goltra (Washington, N.C.) but Scared Heart got the equalizer from Matthew Robideau to tie it up at one apiece with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period. Billy Fuchs and Peter Greco gave Scared Heart its only advantage (3-1) midway through the first period.
Denver pressed hard on offense and with just over a minute left to play in the first period, the Pioneers scored three unanswered goals from freshman Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.), junior Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) and Snider to end the period ahead 5-3.
The Pioneers maintained control of most of the second period and managed three more goals, two from senior Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.), and one from sophomore Ryan Zordani (Littleton, Colo.) to give Denver a four goal advantage (8-4) heading into the third period. Fuchs scored the lone goal for Sacred Heart early in the second period, but SHU was unable to capitalize on any other opportunities.
Denver picked up right where it left off and not even a minute into the third period, senior Greer Hanlon (Libertyville, Ill.) ripped one past SHU keeper Thomas Hind to put the score at 9-4. Sophomore Brandon Barcus (Dublin, Ohio), Brown and Koll followed Hanlon's goal up with one each all within one minute to give the Pioneers an eight-point lead (12-4). Brown added his fifth and sixth goals of the game to increase the lead to ten points (13-4), and Snider tallied back-to-back goals to end the period 16-5 in favor of Denver.
SHU did not give up as Kieran Carney, Christian Lynch and Greco each scored goals for Sacred Heart in the second half, but it was not enough as the Denver sealed the 19-7 win in the fourth period with three goals from senior Blake Evans (New Canaan, Conn.), Brown and Hanlon.
The Pioneers held a 29-16 shots on goal advantage and a 43-32 groundball differential, while Sanders and sophomore keeper Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) recorded nine saves combined.
Denver returns home to face-off against Harvard on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
