Men's Golf Finishes 16th at NCAA West Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Denver men's golf team shot a final-round 3-over par 283 Saturday - its best round of the tournament - and finished in 16th place at the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course. The Pioneers finished with a 54-hole total of 873 (33-over par), nine strokes out 10th place. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams move on to the NCAA National Championships in two weeks.
Leading the way for Denver was sophomore Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.), who shot the best round of any Pioneer golfer in the tournament with a final-round 2-under par 68 Saturday. Soule shot 71-75-68 - 214 (3-over par) in the 54-hole tournament and finished in a four-way tie for 21st place, 10 strokes back of medalist Rob Grube of Stanford (204, 6-under par). Soule was just two strokes from advancing, as Oregon's Gregg Lavoie (211) and South Carolina's Alex Hamilton (212) grabbed the individual spots in Nationals.
Next for Denver was junior James Love (Calgary, Alberta), who closed with a final-round 72 Saturday and finished in a tie for 25th. Love shot 72-71-72 - 215 and was 11 strokes back of the leader. Senior Jimmy Cunningham (Walkersville, Md.) was next for the Pioneers in a tie for 39th after he shot a final-round 1-under par 69 to finish with a 54-hole score of 217 (7-over par).
Rounding out Denver's scores was freshman Scott Tashie (Memphis, Tenn.) in a tie for 123rd at 23-over par 233 and junior Anthony Gillick (Arlington Heights, Ill.) at 127th at 236 (26-over par).
