DENVER- The University of Denver women's soccer team was blanked, 1-0, by the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City this afternoon, with the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-3-1 on the season and Utah improves to 6-0.
In a match marked by defense, the Pioneers had several scoring opportunities but couldn't capitalize on them and went into halftime tied, 0-0. In the second half Utah recorded 11 shots forcing the Pioneers to play a more defensive game. The defense was able to stifle several Utah shots but couldn't stop Utah from scoring the go ahead goal in the 79th minute. Utah's Adele Letro squeezed the ball through the right side of the net past goalkeeper, Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) to give Utah the match, 1-0.
For the second consecutive match the Pioneers weren't able to put any shots in the net. Denver's best scoring opportunity came in the 86th minute when freshman Katie Oates (Littleton, Colo.) took a free kick from 25 yards out, that was stymied by Utah goalkeeper, Ashley Mason. Wiley made two saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Pioneers return to action on September 16 when they travel to Boulder for the Colorado Soccer Classic. Denver faces Pittsburgh Friday, Sept 16 at 1 p.m. and Detroit-Mercy Sunday Sept, 18 at 10 a.m.
