Boulder, Colo.- Junior Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute of action on Sunday afternoon to give Denver the, 4-2 win over the Detroit Titans in its final match of the Colorado Soccer Classic. The Pioneers, currently on a two-game winning streak, improve to 3-3-1 on the season, with two more matches left before conference play begins. Goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made four saves in the match.
"This was a great weekend for us, "head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We were able to find our offense and utilize it in both matches. We saw great things from both our offense and defense, which helped us create a balanced attack. We need to carry over the positive things from this weekend to the rest of our season and hopefully we'll continue to get positive results."
The Pioneers and the Titans both scored goals in the early minutes of the match. Sophomore Taryn Hemmings, (Greeley, Colo.) put Denver on the board first with an unassisted goal from the right side in the sixth minute. Detroit struck right back on a Nicole Gipson goal in the ninth minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Denver battled with the Titans throughout the half getting several good looks at the goal, but it wasn't until the 35th minute when the Pioneers found the back of the net for the second time. Hemmings brought down a punt from Detroit goalie Katie Fortenberry and placed the ball at the feet of Grimditch who buried it in the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half produced more of the same, with several quality scoring opportunities by both teams. Grimditch struck again in the 66th minute, this time off of a Jessica Keller (Arvada, Colo.) pass, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers put the game out of reach in the 70th minute when sophomore Jamie Dierberger (Littleton, Colo.) put a shot in the upper ninety, on a pass out of the backfield from Keller, giving the Pioneers a 4-1 lead. Detroit scored in the final minute of the game to make the final score 4-2.
The Pioneers conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule next weekend when they travel to California for weekend matches with No. 3 UCLA and No 10 Pepperdine. Denver returns to Pioneer Field Friday Sept. 30 when it opens conference action by hosting South Alabama.
