Pepperdine Blanks Denver, 4-0

Malibu, Calif.-The University of Denver women's soccer team fell to No. 12 Pepperdine, 4-0 this afternoon. The Waves scored on goals by Ashley Copp, Jenna Fodor, Amanda Rupp and Megan Woods. Pepperdine improves to 8-0-1 with the win while Denver falls to 3-5-1. Goalkeeper Dani Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) made four saves in the match.

"We played a good team today, "head coach Jeff Hooker said. " We didn't play the match that we wanted to play so this week we need to fix the problems that we had and prepare for conference play. We missed a few slam dunks and a couple lay-ups and we did lose the match, but we will prepare and be ready for South Alabama and Troy this weekend."

In the first half the Pioneers came out with offensive intensity and in the first half putting together several passing sequences, but the Waves that had the first scoring opportunity in the 11th minute of the match. The Pepperdine forward put a shot in the middle of the net only to have goalkeeper Dani Wiley come up with a huge save to preserve the tie. The Pioneers had their opportunities in the half with shots on goal by Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) and Laura Mann (Ft. Collins, Colo.) only to have Pepperdine goalkeeper Anna Picarelli make two saves. Wiley came up big at the end of the first half, with a save in which she punched the ball over the crossbar, but seconds later Pepperdine capitalized on a deflection in the box giving the Waves the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half the Pioneers came out shooting putting their first two shots right on goal, but couldn't get on past Picarelli. Pepperdine scored off of a corner kick in the 55th minute of the game and continued to put shots on goal, adding two more goals to their tally before the match was over giving them the 4-0 win.

Denver returns to the field on Friday Sept. 30 when it begins Sun Belt Conference action by hosting South Alabama. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
