Pioneers Fifth at PING Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior James Love (Calgary, Alberta) fired an opening round 3-under par 68 Monday and finished the first round in a tie for eighth-place, leading the University of Denver men's golf team to a fifth-place finish after the first round of the PING Arizona Intercollegiate at Arizona National Golf Course. Thirty six holes were supposed to be played Monday, but the second round was suspended due to darkness. Completion of the second rounds will begin at 8 a.m.

The Pioneers shot an opening round 2-under par 282, trailing leader and host Arizona (272), Arizona State (273), New Mexico (280), and an Arizona JV squad (281).

Love had five birdies and just two bogeys in his first round and finished the first round just two strokes back of first round leader Jay Choi of New Mexico, who fired a 5-under par 65 in the first round for a one shot lead.

Two Pioneers were tied with DU's second-best scores, as senior Anthony Gillick (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and freshman Chris Gilman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) both shot even-par 71 in the first round, finishing tied for 23rd. Senior Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.), opened with a 1-over par 72 in the first round and finished in a tie for 30th to round out Denver's team scoring. Freshman Jeff Koprivetz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) opened with a 4-over par 75 and is in a tie for 51st.

Just two of Denver's five players were able to finish their first rounds and the remaining three will be out on the course at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. The final 18 holes will immediately follow the completion of the second round.
