Honolulu - Senior Tyesha Lowery (Arlington, Texas) and junior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined for 27 of Denver's 60 points, as DU finished seventh in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, by defeating Sacramento State, 60-31. The Pioneers improved to 2-2 on the season while Sacramento State fell to 1-6.
"We made some defensive adjustments that were successful," head coach Pam Tanner said. "Every one of our student-athletes went in and executed the changes well."
Godette led Denver with 15 points and 14 rebounds, for her first double-double as a Pioneer. Lowery had her fourth consecutive game in double-digit scoring, as she had 12 points, six steals and six rebounds. Junior Jenna Cole (Lincoln, Neb.) made her first start of the season, adding six points and four steals.
The Pioneers started the second half strong, outscoring Sacramento State 8-3, and continued to dominate the play, forcing Sacramento State into 24 total turnovers and recording 28 points off the Hornets' turnovers.
"We took them out of what they wanted to do offensively," said Tanner.
In the first half, Godette got the Pioneers out to a fast start, hitting Denver's first two baskets of the game. Denver hit a scoring drought for 2:33 but recovered nicely, as Cole fed Brianna Culberson (Jefferson City, Mo.) for an easy lay-up under the basket. 7' The Pioneers closed out the first half on a 21-6 run, led in part by back-to-back three pointers by freshmen Megan Givens (Hudson, Wisc.) and Culberson, who each scored six points. Denver scored 18 of its first half 31 points in the paint, to lead 31-13 at the half.
DU returns to the Mainland as they take on front-range rival Colorado State Sunday, Dec. 3 in Ft. Collins, Colo., at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.denverpioneers.com.
