MIAMI - The University of Denver men's tennis team continued its winning ways, defeating Manhattan 4-2 Sunday in Miami. The Pioneers improve to 9-4 on the season and tally their first win of a four-match spring trip in Florida.
"Being our first match of this long spring trip, I thought we played well," said head coach Geoff Young. "It's always good to get a win under your belt and especially against a good team like Manhattan. I think we were a little more fit than they were and that allowed us to get the win."
The Pioneers began with singles, where they clenched the match and both teams opted not to play doubles. Senior Viktor Zetterholm (Nacka, Sweden) tallied Denver's first victory at No. 5 singles, defeating David Alvarado 6-2, 6-0. Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) was also victorious at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bogdan Borta. After dropping both matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 position, rookie Aljosa Nipic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) defeated Filip Szymik 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 before Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) sealed the DU victory with a 6-7(7-4) 6-4, 6-4 win over Zolton Bus.
Denver returns to action Tuesday in Boca Raton against Florida Atlantic.
