MIAMI - The University of Denver men's tennis team improved to 10-4 on the season Tuesday with a 7-0 rout of Florida Atlantic. The victory marked Denver's fifth straight win on the season and second in a four-match trip in Florida.
"I was hoping to see us play tough heading into our last two matchups and we are doing that," said head coach Geoff Young. "It was good to get these two wins with Miami and Northwestern coming up."
Despite not playing doubles in their last match Sunday, the Pioneers came out strong to win the doubles point against FAU. The No. 71 duo of Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Kevin Obletz and David Demers 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to post an 8-3 win over J.P. Bounassar and Mauricio Paiz, capturing the doubles point for DU.
With Florida Atlantic playing with only five players, both the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions were deemed walkovers in the favor of the Pioneers. In singles, Flaks defeated Paiz 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to seal the match for DU.
The Pioneers return to the court tomorrow to face No. 14 Miami at noon.
