No. 45 Pioneers Drop 4-3 Match To Marshall

MIAMI - The No. 45 University of Denver women's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to Marshall Tuesday, falling to 6-7 on the season. Despite leading 3-2 with in the match, losses at No. 2 and No. 6 singles broke a three-match win Pioneer win streak.
"Marshall played a very tough match today," said head coach Dana Young. "Hopefully, we can make a strong rebound against Miami tomorrow."
The Pioneers were behind early after dropping the doubles point. Suzana Maksovic (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) tallied Denver's only win in doubles at the No. 1 position, defeating Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt 9-8(7-5).
DU jumped out to a good start in singles, with Maksovic defeating Kever 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) grabbed DU's next win at No. 4 singles, ousting Marshall's Shannon Brown 6-4, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, junior Marisa Mechem (Fredricksburg, Texas) gave Denver the 3-2 advantage in the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Karolina Soor.
Unfortunately, the Pioneers were unable to hold on as Aksdal suffered only her fourth loss of the season to Schmitt by the score of 6-1, 7-5. With the match resting on the outcome at No. 6 singles, rookie Lorinda Boothman fell just short against Jessica Keener, falling 6-3, 6-3.
The Pioneers return to the court tomorrow, facing No. 7 Miami at 10 a.m.
