PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The University of Denver men's golf team shot a final-round 4-over par 292 Wednesday and finished in seventh place at the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Championship at PGA Village. The Pioneers shot a 54-hole total of 888 (14-over par) and finished 13 strokes back of Western Kentucky, who captured the championship in a sudden-death playoff over North Texas and South Alabama. All three teams finished with 54-hole scores of 875 (11-over par) but WKU won the title on the second playoff hole.
James Love (Calgary, Alberta) was Denver's low finisher, shooting a final-round 2-over par 74 Wednesday to finish in a two-way tie for third place, just three strokes back of first place. Love shot a 54-hole score of 214 (2-under par) and finished three strokes back of WKU's Brent Long, who won by one shot over South Alabama's Johnny Caldwell with a 54-hole score of 211 (5-under par).
Next for the Pioneers was junior Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.), who shot his best round of the tournament Wednesday with a 2-under par 70 and finished in a four-way tie for 16th place with a 54-hole total of 220 (4-over par). Freshman Chris Gilman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) shot a 5-over par 77 on Wednesday and finished in a tie for 31st at 228 (12-over par) and senior Anthony Gillick (Lincoln, Neb.) fired a final-round 73 today to finish tied for 34th at 230. Sophomore Scott Tashie (Memphis, Tenn.) rounded out DU's scores in a tie for 39th with a three-round total of 232 (16-over par).
Both Love and Soule were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Men's Team for their season-long high level of play.
