DENVER - University of Denver senior swimmer Brian Flaherty (Granite Bay, Calif.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII men's at-large team, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Flaherty will now be placed on the ballot for voting for Academic All-America at-large honors.
Flaherty will graduate from DU in June with a perfect 4.0 GPA in molecular biology and biochemistry. The two-time captain helped DU to a second-place finish at the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. Flaherty earned 19 top-10 finishes in 2006 and was a member of the 800-freestyle relay team that set a school record in 2005. He recorded the highest MCAT score (38) at the University of Denver in 20 years. Flaherty is a three-time DU swimming and diving scholar-athlete of the year and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He has volunteered with Girl Scouts of America and the Denver Children's Hospital and has served as a biology laboratory teaching assistant, a chemistry tutor and a research intern with the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center. Flaherty plans to attend medical school to become a clinical researcher in the fight against cancer. He has been accepted and will attend Washington University in St. Louis.
The Academic All-America at-large team will be announced on Tuesday, June 13.
