DU Volleyball Defeats UC Riverside at Denver Invitational

DENVER - The University of Denver wrapped up its first home weekend of competition with a 3-1 win over the UC Riverside Highlanders 30-26, 24-30, 30-16 and 30-21 Saturday evening at Hamilton Gym in the final game of the Denver Invitational. Senior Lisa Hunter (St. Louis, Mo.) had 24 kills and setter Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) had a tournament-high 57 assists as DU finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record. The Pioneers improved to 2-2 overall, while UC Riverside remained winless on the season at 0-6.
"I was very pleased with our aggressiveness," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "We played very aggressive along the net and really played up our strengths."
The Pioneers gave up 10 straight points to Highlanders and went on to lose the first game 30-26. DU quickly rebounded and dominated the next two games 30-24 and 30-16. In the fourth game of the match, Denver and UC Riverside battled closely but the Pioneers took over at 15-13 in the game and went on to win 30-21.
DU's Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) added 16 kills and the team registered 20 blocks in the decisive win.
Bowling Green was crowned tournament champions as they finished 3-0, sweeping all its opponents. Northern Arizona finished third with a 1-2 record, while UC Riverside was winless in its three matches.
Denver's Muller and Hunter were named to the Denver Invitational all-tournament team and were joined by Ashley Halperin of UC Riverside, Cybeles Onuegbulem of Northern Arizona, and Bowling Green's Corey Domek and Chrissy Gothke. Gothke was named the tournament MVP.
DU returns to action next Friday evening against Georgia in the Pioneer Classic at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton Gym.
