BOULDER - Freshman Brooke Lamphere (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored the game-winning goal and senior Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) posted her third shutout of the season in the University of Denver's 1-0 win over Clemson (2-2) in the Colorado Women's Soccer Classic this afternoon in Boulder. The game-winner was Lamphere's first goal of her career as the Pioneers stay unbeaten at 3-0-1.
"We had a lot of chances in the second half to put the game away, but we allowed Clemson to stay in the game by not getting the second goal," DU head coach Jeff Hooker said. "All in all it was a good win for us against a very good ACC team."
Lamphere scored the lone goal of the match at 40:42. She received a cross from teammate Elise Mascitelli (Denver, Colo.) and headed the ball past Clemson goalkeeper Ashley Phillips.
"It was a tremendous goal by Brooke," said Hooker, "She received a beautiful ball from Elise and Brooke knew if she headed the ball she was going to pay the price. It was a gutty goal by a freshman.
DU outshot Clemson 11-4 for the match and had four corner kicks. Wiley needed just one save to post her 25th career shutout. Junior Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) and senior Laura Mann (Ft. Collins, Colo.) combined for five shots on goal.
