PARK CITY, Utah - The University of Denver ski team finished third overall at the Utah Invitational, led by the women's alpine team, which won the giant slalom, and Rene Reisshauer (Erfurt, Germany), who finished second in the 15K freestyle today after winning the 10K classic yesterday and helped the Nordic team finish in a tie for first.
DU scored a total of 522 points. Colorado was first with a score of 552, and Utah was second with 537 points.
The Pioneers finished third in the day's alpine events with 132 points, behind Utah's 143 and Colorado's 134. The women won the giant slalom race, while the men finished fourth in the slalom.
Francesco Ghedina (Cortina, Italy) finished the slalom in 1:33.61, which placed him fifth in the event, followed by Ian Dunlop (Hartland, Wis.) in eighth, Sean Higgins (Sun Valley, Idaho) in 23rd, Ian Lockhead (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) in 28th and Adam Cole (Park City, Utah) in 32nd.
On the women's side, Jennifer Tank (Lenggries, Germany) was 5th, Karine Falck-Pedersen (Slependen, Norway) 7th, Lindsay McClure (Hood River, Ore.) 10th, Molly Ryan (Big Sky, Mont.) 13th and Claire Abbe (Burnsville, Minn.) 24th.
DU's Nordic team ended the day in a tie for first place with Montana State with both teams scoring 134 points.
Denver won the men's 15K freestyle. Reisshauer placed second, five seconds behind CU's Matthew Gelso, followed by Mike Hinckley (Anchorage, Alaska) in seventh, Taylor Sheldon (Breckenridge, Colo.) in ninth, John Stene (Trondheim, Norway) in 16th, Havard Selseng (Sogndal, Norway) 23rd, Espen Haugen (Anchorage, Alaska) in 36th and Kyle Ahern (Breckenridge, Colo.) 43rd.
In the women's 10K freestyle, Annelise Baily was 4th, Courtney Dauwalter (Edina, Minn.) 16th, Kara LaPoint (Truckee, Calif.) 18th, Katie Ronsse (Anchorage, Alaska) 30th and Stefanie Wunderle 34th. Overall, the women's team finished third in the event.
The Nordic skiers head to Bohart Ranch, Mont., next week for their portion of the Montana State Invitational, where DU is in second place after the slalom competition last week. The alpine skiers have a few weeks off before heading to Winter Park, Colo., on Feb. 2-3 to host the University of Denver Invitational.
