Denver Shuts Out Troy, 7-0

Box Score

DENVER Senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman forward Lauren Cavarra (Littleton, Colo.) scores two goals apiece on Sunday, as the University of Denver women’s soccer team shut out Troy, 7-0.

“This was a very good game for us, and I’m especially proud of the seniors and how they played in their final home game,” said head coach Jeff Hooker, whose team outshot the Trojans, 45-1. “We needed a breakout game like this, and hopefully we can build on the momentum as we finish off the season with a challenging stretch of Sun Belt games on the road.”

As the rain drizzled down and the temperatures hovered in the low 40s, seniors Billingsley, Jamie Dierberger (Littleton, Colo.), Elise Mascitelli (Denver, Colo.), Kyle McFarlane (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Rachael Fry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) played their final game at Pioneer Field.

McFarlane got the Pioneers (6-3-4, 3-1-2 SBC) rolling 11 minutes into the game, as she chipped the ball from about 34 yards out. Troy goalkeeper Karla Smith reached up to stop it, but the ball slipped through Smith’s hands.

After the Trojans (5-10-0, 1-5-0 SBC) scored an own goal, Denver took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

DU wasted little time adding insurance goals in the second half, as Billingsley buried one-timers from sophomore midfielder Kelli Breidenbach (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Mascitelli, both from the left side, in the 50th and 54th minutes, respectively.

Cavarra added her two goals during a six minute span halfway through the second half, receiving assists from Fry and sophomore midfielder Katie Culp (Carlsbad, Calif.).

Culp added the exclamation point with five minutes remaining in the game, when she booted a free kick through the Trojans’ wall and past the goalkeeper.

The Pioneers end their season with five games on the road, beginning with UALR on Friday and Arkansas State on Sunday, before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Nov. 7-11 at Mobile, Ala.
