Golden Goal Lifts Denver, 2-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. Sophomore forward Mariah Johnston (Littleton, Colo.) scored a goal in the second overtime to lift the University of Denver women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action.

 

Western Kentucky (13-2-2, 8-1-1 SBC), which entered the contest undefeated in SBC play, scored first when Amanda Buechel scored off a rebound just 5:18 into the game.

 

Junior forward Jessi Keller (Ralston Valley, Colo.) tied the contest just over three minutes later off a feed from senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.).

 

The game remained tied through the first overtime, but Johnston buried an unassisted goal in the 107th minute, giving the Pioneers (9-4-4, 6-2-2 SBC) the victory.

 

DU outshot the Hilltoppers, 16-7.

 

The Pioneers conclude the regular season at North Texas on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. before heading to Mobile, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Nov. 7-10.
