Box Score

BOULDER, Colo. The University of Denver women’s soccer team ended with a 5-0 loss to Portland this afternoon at Prentup Field in the First Round of the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.

“I’m proud of the way our team played all year,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “Today we just faced a very talented Portland team. They are a very well coached, and they play a very entertaining form of soccer.”

Denver (12-5-4) had a scoring chance in the 28th minute off a corner kick by senior defender Jamie Dierberger (Littleton, Colo.). After a header went straight up, senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) kicked a shot that was blocked at the goal line. Sophomore forward Mariah Johnston (Littleton, Colo.) headed the rebound just wide of the goal.

Portland (16-3-0) scored in the 31st minute, when Michelle Enyeart passed the ball through the Denver defense, and Kendra Chandhoke beat sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) to the ball and sent it into the empty net.

Enyeart set up the Pilots’ second goal 10 minutes later, setting up Angie Woznuk, who scored from the left on a 2-on-1 attack.

Sophie Schmidt broke past DU’s defense in the 60th minute, shooting from the top of the box off Snyder’s hands and into the left side of the goal.

Schmidt scored a second goal four minutes later. Snyder saved a hard shot by Schmidt, but the rebound found its way to Elli Reed, who set up the goal-scoring header by Schmidt.

Enyeart put an exclamation point on the contest in the 88th minute, beating Snyder in the box and burying Portland’s final goal.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament champions, the Pioneers entered Boulder looking for its second-straight First Round victory. Last season, DU beat Kentucky at Prentup Field for the team’s first-ever Tournament win.
