DENVER - Former football, basketball, and track and field standout and 2000 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Gregg Browning, died last Thursday night after a battle with cancer. He was 85.
Browning was a three-year letterwinner in football, two-year letterman in basketball and earned one letter in track. He was selected two times as first-team All-Skyline Conference (Football) in 1942 and `46, and was an honorable mention selection once (1941). After a successful three years in athletics, he served in the United States Navy. He came back and led the Pioneers with six touchdown receptions in 1946, finishing his career with a total of eight touchdown receptions. After his success at Denver, Browning went on to play professionally in the NFL for the New York Giants.
He is perhaps most well-known for his career as the head football coach at George Washington High School in Denver, where he coached from 1960-1974, finishing as state runner-up six different times. In 14 years as the Patriots' head coach, Browning-coached teams won over 80 percent of their games.
